It is common knowledge that watching programs in English will progress your language skills (which is why we have added a video element to MyDialogue) but how to select which ones to watch, especially given the vast level of content available? What kind of programs are good for learning English? In short, every program is beneficial, but there are a couple of criterias that you can help direct your choice
Accents
One particularity of English is that it is spoken in many regions, which results in a variety of different accents. An American accent sounds wildly different to an English accent (which shares more similarities with the South African accent.) But even within countries, accents vary, it is difficult to believe that a Scotman is from the same country as an Englishman! As an English learner, it is important to be able to understand all types of accents (although sometimes anglophones have difficulties between themselves – here’s the proof – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jHfY0dDZxA.) Consequently, your choice of programs should reflect the range of accents. Of course, due to the preponderant role of Hollywood, your screen will mainly be occupied by American accents, but if possible, try to introduce your ears to the English / Scottish / Australian and South African accents.
Level
The program that is best suited to you depends on your level. If you are a novice, start with a kids show, for example, a cartoon or animation. Although this may appear mind numbing, you will be surprised to learn that many cartoons have quite a large adult audience! ( https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2564001/why-adults-still-watch-spongebob-according-to-spongebob-voice-tom-kenny ) If you are an advanced learner, you will benefit from watching shows targeted at adults, and here, you can select a show based on your own interests – there is something for every taste.
Type of language
When learning English, it is important to be exposed to a wide range of language. Language that you hear in the news or documentaries will differ from casual speech that you will hear in sitcoms, dramas or reality TV. To reach fluency, you must familiarise yourself with all types of language, and your TV choices should take this element into account!
