Learning a language is often difficult and monotonous, but there are several ways to brighten it up and transform it into an exciting hobby. One is to learn English through songs. Although this may seem daunting at first, as even many native English speakers struggle to distinguish words in songs, there are several benefits to this method of learning.
1. Language learning becomes less of a chore
Learning verb tables and apostrophe rules only provide a limited level of excitement. It’s easy to become disillusioned just by reading that the English language contains around 470 irregular verbs. To keep motivated enough to achieve fluency, you need to change your perception of learning. It must become an enjoyable task, and this is achieved through music. Choose a couple of your favourite English songs, and learn the words! This creative way of learning is arguably more fun than learning past participles as you learn whilst singing!
2. Words and verbs are easy to remember
It’s often hard to remember new words, but the catchy nature of music means that the new material learnt is easier to recall! Furthermore, learning is reinforced by relistening to songs you have previously learned, and in this case, you are able to revise new words without having to even take out a pen or look at a book!
3. Never ending content
As new music is constantly released, you will never be short of new words to learn, and at the same time, you are able to discover different music!
4. Improve your slang
Slang is one of the hardest elements of a language to grasp, and music includes a lot of it! Learning English through music will expose you to new idioms and slang, and their understanding is essential to becoming fluent! Sometimes songs even invent new words that enter into the English dictionary, like Eminem’s song, Stan, (combination of stalker and fan), which now means ‘obsessive fan’.
5. Improve your Listening skills
Through listening to music, your listening will inevitably improve. This is especially the case as words are spoken very quickly, so if you are able to discern words in music, you will have no problem in a real-life environment! Music also exposes you to all different accents!
